LEARN @ LUNCH SERIES

Learn at Lunch (L@L) is an informal conversation about teaching strategies that takes place on the first and third Thursday of every month in Zoom. Topics vary but include student engagement, teaching with technology, authentic assessment, and more.

Each week we at CAT share micro tips for various pedagogy strategies and tools on Substack and @uclateaching Twitter! We pair our L@L conversations with these content posts to make space for intentional discussion and brainstorming. All faculty, teaching assistants, and instructional support staff are welcome to attend! We encourage you to drop into this learning community at any time.

We want this space to reflect the needs of UCLA’s educators. This means that while we may have material prepared for these sessions, we welcome any and all questions and suggestions! We’d be happy to brainstorm new ideas, help you practice teaching strategies, or to simply have interesting conversations with you about teaching!

Join our Learn @ Lunch Slack Channel

We have created a channel in UCLA’s Slack so we can extend our lunchtime conversations. You don’t need to create a new account in Slack, simply sign in with your UCLA logon to join our channel.

To get started:

  1. Open a web browser and go to https://ucla.slack.com
  2. Click “Sign in with your UCLA Logon ID
  3. Log in with your UCLA logon
  4. You will see 2 window panes, look for “Channels” in the left window pane
  5. Hover your mouse over “Channels” then click the + icon to Add channels
  6. Select “Browse channels
  7. Enter in the search box: #cat-learn-at-lunch
  8. Hit “Enter” on your keyboard
  9. Hover over the search result and click the green “Join” button
  10. You should now see the #cat-learn-at-lunch under “Channels” in the left window pane

Learn @ Lunch Community Agreements

All faculty, teaching assistants, and instructional support staff are welcome to attend our informal Learn @ Lunch conversations. To help ensure that our meetings offer a brave space for dialogue and collaboration, we ask participants to observe the following community agreements. To recommend additional community agreements for the group, email CAT Associate Director for Faculty Engagement Beth Goodhue.

General Agreements

  • Take space / make space — step up / step back
  • Listen to understand
  • Challenge ideas, not identities
  • Learn and use names and personal pronouns
  • When someone says something that offends someone else, we will care about both intent and impact — we will assume good intent (you made a mistake instead of intentionally harming) and each person must take responsibility for their negative impact (you hurt someone)

Zoom Etiquette

  • Please feel free to eat your lunch during these meetings!
  • Mute mic unless speaking
  • Video on if you’re willing–especially in small group discussions
  • In larger groups, raise your virtual hand to ask questions (click “Participants” and then raise hand)
  • Use the chat any time to ask questions or share resources
